Frequently Asked Questions


Who is invited?

Everyone. All fitness levels, all interests.The Great American Fitness Challenge is an experience for the entire family and everyone’s invited.  Whether you want to participate in our events or cheer on the participants, there will be room for everyone!

What can you tell me about the events?

The LAND challenge is modeled after the Physical Standards of the ARMY Rangers. The event begines with a 200 yard (100yd down and back) 25lb (each) farmers can carry. Next, calisthenics, participants will have 2:00 minutes to do as many Push-ups as possible. Then, there will be a 2:00 minute break. Following the break will be another 2:00 minutes for participants to do as many sit-ups as possible. Again, a 2:00 minute break then, 2:00 minutes to do as many pull-ups as possible. The calisthenics portion will be followed by a 10:00 minute break while participants prepare for the running portion. The run consists of a 5K (3.1 Miles). However, this is not your ordinary 5K. Each participant will be provided with a 20lb weighted vest for the run. This is to simulate the heavy gear the Rangers are required to carry.

The SEA Challenge is modeled after the physical standards of the NAVY SEALS. Beginning with the swim, participants will swim 500 yards. Participants are recommended to perform either a Breast Stroke or Combat Side Stroke (CSS). After the swim, participants will have a 10:00 minute break to transition from the aquatic center to the Field. Then, the calisthenics portion will begin. Participants will have 2:00 minutes to do as many Push-ups as possible. Then, there will be a 2:00 minute break. Following the break will be another 2:00 minutes for participants to do as many sit-ups as possible. Again, a 2:00 minute break then, 2:00 minutes to do as many pull-ups as possible. The calisthenics portion will be followed by a 10:00 minute break while participants prepare for the running portion. Participants will finish out the challenge by running 1.5 miles (no weighted vest for the SEA Challenge).

What do I get for my registration fee?

It’s fair to say it’s an embarrassment of riches.  All participants will receive an official Great American Fitness Challenge race t-shirt, aid station water, post race snacks, and more!

Can I register for more than one race?

You bet!

How old must I be to participate?

All ages are invite!

When and where is the packet pick-up?

Thursday 6/1 @ Marshall Lifestyle Fitness in Hamburg from 4-8pm. 2251 War Admiral Way (Next to the new A&W)

Friday 6/2 @ Commonwealth Stadium from 11am – 1pm (pull into the Red Lot and you will see us under the Commonwealth Stadium sign)

What do I need to pick up my packet?

We ask all competitors to show a photo ID when picking up their packets.

Can someone pick it up for me?

Okay, but just this once.  If you must send someone to pick up your packet, they must have a printed copy of your confirmation email.

What time does my race start?

When you register you will be prompted to select a start time. Please arrive at least 30min early to your designated start time.

Can I register with a team?

Yes! Compete as a team and win the GAFC Team Trophy! Register for a team by clicking here Team Registration . There is no limit to the number of people you can have in a team. However, teams will be awarded by averaging the scores from your top 5 competitors (only). One team will win bragging rights for the entire year from each event!

Will there be day-of registration available?

You can register the day of the event at registration/information tent. We do highly recommend pre-race registration to ensure you receive your t-shirt and to get the best price for the challenge.

Can I volunteer for the event?

Yes, we love volunteers! As a volunteer you’ll be given a FREE t-shirt, a specific job (that may or may not include the use of a megaphone) and the admiration of our paid staffers. Sound impressive?  It is!  You can volunteer here.  Do you have any friends who want to come too? Just get them to register as a volunteer as well. 

How do I transfer/cancel a registration?

Registrations are final and no refunds are given. But…

Go to My Races on the registration page and select the Transfer to Another Runner tab to complete your registration transfer.  There will be a $10 fee in order to transfer your registration.

What if it rains? 

We’re running this baby rain or shine.  In the event that weather or other unforeseeable conditions are deemed by Event Organizers to be potentially hazardous to participants and volunteers, the organizers reserve the right to postpone the start of any race or festival activity. 

When and where will race results be posted?

Race results will be listed immediately following your race at the results table under the swanky participant tent©, or just whip out your smart phone.  Results will also be live on our website and RunSignUp.com.

What are the award divisions/breakdown?

Awards will be given to the Overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female of each race as well as the top three finishers, male and female, within each age range.

When is the award ceremony?

Will Men and Women participate together or in different divisions?

Men and Women will participate simultaneously in all events and be scored on the same metric.

How will I be timed?

Timing chips will be provided as part of your race bib (told you it was a collector’s item).  Race bibs are picked up at packet pick up.

How early should I arrive?

Plan to arrive at least 30min prior to your given start time.

Where is parking and where should I go once I arrive?

Will there be food and water provided or for sale?

There will be food and water provided for registered race participants.  Things like bananas, oranges, and granola will be available along with a limited supply of some specialty food provided by race sponsors.  This will all be provided at the participant tent©.
